Coronavirus Confession Restrictions

March 31, 2020

Dear St. Denis parishioners:

Unfortunately, because of the current public-health emergency and Governor Newsom’s “Stay at Home” order,  the priests at St. Denis, in accordance with Archbishop José Gomez’s instructions, are unable to offer confessions at this time unless a person is dying or in extremely extraordinary circumstances.

In his homily on March 20, 2020, Pope Francis advised Catholics what to do if they can’t find a priest for Confession:

“If you don’t find a priest to go to confession, speak to God.  He’s your Father.  Tell Him the truth. ‘Lord. I did this and this and this.  Pardon me.’  Ask His forgiveness with all your heart, with an act of contrition, and promise Him, ‘Afterward I will go to confession.’  You will return to God's grace immediately.”  (This quotation is an excerpt from this article.)

Here is an article with more information about how to make an “act of perfect contrition.”

St. Denis will offer regular confessions when it is safe to do so and as soon as we are authorized to do so by Archbishop Gomez.

In the meantime, I encourage everyone to pray for an end to this pandemic by praying the Rosary every day along with Archbishop Gomez’s “Prayer in the Time of the Coronavirus,” which is on St. Denis’s website (StDenis.org).

Please stay home and stay safe until the pandemic passes.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Fr. John Palmer
